At the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies of the University of Vienna the position of a University Professor of Korean Studies (full time, permanent position) is to be filled.
As specified in the University`s Development Plan, the position is to be linked to the research area “Global Cultures and Identities”.
Korean Studies at the University of Vienna are focused on current affairs. Based on a solid cultural and historical foundation, the focus in research and especially in teaching is mainly on the society of Korea in the 20th and 21st century. The successful candidate must show a strong record of high‐quality publications and competitive research grants in one or more of the following areas (alphabetic order, no expression of priorities):
‐‐ Cultural and art history
‐‐ Digital humanities
‐‐ Literature, media and popular culture
‐‐ Religion and society
‐‐ Urbanization, migration, and environmental studies
‐‐ Welfare and sociology
A comparative intraregional or transregional perspective on other countries in East Asia is considered an advantage.
The successful candidate is expected to teach eight hours per semester at all levels (Bachelor, Master, PhD), to supervise theses and dissertations, to support young academics and to actively participate in the university’s self‐governance. He or she will also have the task to re‐organize and modernize the Korean Studies program in response to a surging demand in the past years.
Successful candidates should have the following qualifications:
▪ Doctoral degree/PhD and substantial post‐doctoral experience at a university or other research institution
▪ Habilitation (venia docendi) in a subject field relevant to this position or an internationally accepted equivalent qualification is desirable
▪ Outstanding achievements in research, excellent publication record, international reputation
▪ Experience in designing, procuring and managing large research projects, as well as the willingness and ability to lead research groups
▪ Enthusiasm for excellent teaching, teaching experience at universities as well as the ability and willingness to teach students in all phases of their studies (bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral level), to supervise academic theses and to promoting young academic colleagues
▪ Moreover, the successful candidate should be prepared to teach on topics related to Korean popular culture regardless of research specialization
The University of Vienna expects the successful candidate to acquire, within three years, proficiency in German sufficient for teaching in bachelor’s programmes and for participation in university committees. In addition, the University of Vienna expects the successful candidate to be prepared to take over responsibility on the organisational level of the Faculty and the University.
