Bangladesh in a state of emergency

12. August 2024, 11:30 – 12:30 CEST, Online
Organized by the OAV in cooperation with the GIGA Institute for Asian Studies.
The student protests in Bangladesh, which have been going on for weeks, escalated last weekend and led to the resignation and flight of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Since then, the country has been in a state of political emergency. Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus (founder of the Grameen Bank) has agreed to lead the interim government until new elections are held. This will provide a fresh, but fragile opportunity for Bangladesh to renew democracy and to provide new economic impetus.
After brief welcome remarks of OAV’s Chairman Dr. Arnd Nenstiel, our online session will start with an eyewitness report by Ms. Julia Wesemann, a German private sector consultant based in Dhaka. Afterwards, Ms. Ishrat Hossain, Associate at the GIGA Institute for Asian Studies in Hamburg, will provide an overview of the events in Bangladesh and give an assessment of further developments. Finally, local and German business representatives will report on the impact on their local business activities.
The online session will be held in English language. Participation is free of charge, but requires a registration here.
