The College of Liberal Studies at Seoul National University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in the field of East Asian Studies (including Korean Studies), beginning September 2024. This position is open only to non-Korean nationals.

The College of Liberal Studies (CLS) is an undergraduate college dedicated to Liberal Arts and Interdisciplinary Education within the larger Seoul National University (SNU) system. CLS students can choose any major across the Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Engineering, and Business Administration. They are encouraged to major in various Interdisciplinary Programs on campus (such as Information Science and Culture, Artificial Intelligence, etc) and can also design their own majors (such as International Science Cooperation, Peace Studies, Social Ecology etc).

The successful candidate will demonstrate a broad and robust research agenda as well as a commitment to excel in teaching and mentoring a wide range of students. We welcome applicants in all fields of East Asian Studies, including but not limited to literature, history, anthropology, sociology, political science, media studies, visual culture, past and present. Applicants who can further our critical understanding of issues and experiences in contemporary and historical East Asia and also communicate effectively the significance and value of such inquiries are especially welcome. The ability to interact with and advise students with diverse majors, the majority of whom are native Korean speakers as well as international English speakers, and the capacity to work together with colleagues in advancing the educational mission of the College is essentional.

The successful candidate will co-teach thematic first-year seminars with colleagues at CLS, in English and Korean, develop intermediate courses in their field of expertise and specialized courses for international students, and guide undergraduate research. Affiliation with a relevant department in the College of Humanities or the Social Sciences, etc, at SNU will be encouraged and supported.

This position is open only to foreign nationals. Korean citizens are not eligible to apply. All candidates must have a Ph.D. in hand at the point of application. Korean is the primary language of instruction and administration at SNU, though some courses may be taught in English. SNU provides a generous start-up fund, various research grants, subsidized on-campus housing, and the opportunity to work with over 2000 faculty across the disciplines.
