The Asian Studies Center at the University of Pittsburgh is a hub for interdisciplinary research, education, and community engagement focused on Asia. With over 100 affiliated faculty, the Center supports a variety of academic programs and resources, including the East Asian Library, the National Consortium for Teaching About Asia, and funding opportunities for students and faculty. The Center serves students, faculty, K-12 educators, and the broader western Pennsylvania community. It is a U.S. Department of Education National Resource Center (NRC).

The Center is seeking an Assistant Director of Academic Affairs to:

  • Provide academic advising, helping students set academic and career goals
  • Oversee the FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) grant program, assisting with applications and ensuring compliance with federal regulations
  • Contribute to student recruitment efforts and collaborate with faculty and staff to attract and retain students
  • Manage faculty and student funding competitions for research and professional development
  • Develop and implement advising practices and policies to support student success
  • Interpret and communicate university policies and represent the department on relevant committees
  • Track and analyze student enrollment and achievement data to inform decisions
  • Collaborate with campus units like the Career Resource Center to support student development

Qualifications:

  • Required: A Master’s degree or higher in Asian Studies, Anthropology, History, or a related field with appropriate research experience.
  • Strong background in academic advising, student development theory, and higher education administration.
  • Familiarity with federal grant programs, particularly the FLAS grant program.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across disciplines and departments.
  • Experience with facilitating and budgeting for grant programs.

This position will start fully on-campus, with the potential of some hybrid work after a successful provisional period (4 days on campus, 1 day remote per week).  Some travel may be required.
