The Department of World Languages & Cultures at the University of Utah invites applications for a full-time, renewable Assistant Professor (Lecturer) position in Japanese beginning July 1, 2024. The teaching load is three courses per semester. The successful candidate will be prepared to teach Japanese language courses at all levels, potentially including content courses in their area of expertise, as well as to participate actively in curricular and program affairs. Preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. in hand by the start date in Japanese pedagogy, linguistics, or a related field. Demonstrated experience in teaching Japanese as a foreign language at the college level in North America and native or near-native fluency in Japanese and English are required. Adaptability with instructional technologies, experience implementing up-to-date foreign language teaching methodologies, and involvement in the professional field are highly desirable. Research activities are not a requirement of the position, but the Department and the University offer support for faculty research at the Assistant Professor (Lecturer) rank.

Complete applications include 1) a letter of application outlining the candidate’s qualifications for the position (submit via “Cover Letter”); 2) a curriculum vitae (submit via “Curriculum Vitae”); 3) a one-page teaching statement (submit via “Teaching Statement”); 4) a statement of contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion (submit via “Writing Sample 1”); and 5) a sample lesson plan that includes a link to a 10- to 15-minute video demonstration of part of the plan (submit via “Writing Sample 2”). Three letters of recommendation will also be solicited. For full consideration, all materials should be submitted by February 2, 2024. Questions may be addressed to Prof. Ashton Lazarus (ashton.lazarus@utah.edu).
