CfA: Assistant Professor of Southeast Asia

The Department of Transnational Asian Studies at Rice University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor in the study of Southeast Asia, with a preferred sub-field in Asian-American/Diasporic Studies, Medical Humanities, Environmental Studies, Science and Technology, or the study of Gender and Sexuality. The department priority is to bring in a scholar whose research explores Southeast Asian societies in a variety of contexts, including the different geographies of Southeast Asia (inland, coastal, and maritime) and/or the transnational reach and impact of the people and cultures of that region.
The Department of Transnational Asian Studies is housed in the School of the Humanities and employs the full range of methods of cross-disciplinary scholarship in the humanities and social sciences. Our department is unique in its focus on transnational, transhistorical, and global movements of peoples, ideas, practices, and cultures of Asia, including that of the diaspora. Rather than viewing Asia as a collection of bordered nation-states, we re-imagine it as a series of regional and global transformations, influences, migrations, trade, and political formations. The Department of Transnational Asian Studies works in close collaboration with the Chao Center for Asian Studies, which functions as the premier research hub for Asia-affiliated Rice faculty, students, and post-doctoral fellows.
