Venue: State University of Malang, Malang, East-Java, Indonesia
The European Association for Southeast Asian Studies (EuroSEAS) organizes a masterclass for a small number (maximum 9) of PhD students who work on Southeast Asia in the field of the Humanities and Social Sciences.
Unlike the former masterclasses that were always held in conjunction with the EuroSEAS conference, this year, for the first time, the masterclass will take place in Southeast Asia, as an independent event on 22 & 23 May2023 in cooperation with the State University of Malang, in Malang, East-Java, Indonesia.
As in former editions, during the workshop the PhD students are expected either to discuss their research proposal (first-year students) or a key chapter of their thesis (advanced students), and to co-comment on another PhD candidate’s work. A panel of carefully selected senior Southeast Asia scholars covering a broad range of specializations will provide constructive feedback on the submitted materials.
Aim
The aim of this PhD workshop is to bring together young academics from different disciplines focusing on a diverse range of topics concerning Southeast Asia. This SEA-based, EuroSEAS masterclass is meant for PhD students who are based either in Southeast Asian or European institutions, or affiliated to EuroSEAS members, and who already plan to be in the region at the time of the event. Out of ecological awareness, we do not wish to increase our carbon footprint generated by long-distance flights and therefore will only support in-region travels.
Application
Eligible PhD students interested in this masterclass should send an application consisting of a: – Cover letter – 1 page CV – Project/research description of max 1000 words – Letter of recommendation from their supervisor
The closing date for submissions is 24 March 2023.
Financial support
For the eiligible Phd students already travelling in Southeast Asia, EuroSEAS will offer financial support to a maximum of € 700 based on real, proven costs. However, the home universities of the participants are expected to cover part of the costs as well.
Selection results
The selection results will be announced on 15 April 2023.
Selection results
In conjunction with the masterclass, the State University of Malang will organize a side event on 23 & 24 May 2023, entitled Creating popular materials from your research. All the masterclass students are invited to participate.
