PhD Fellowship in Global China Studies (m/f/d)

(Stipend; limited for 36 months)

We are seeking a highly motivated researcher to join our efforts to study China’s changing international practices under the conditions of a world order in transition. Starting in April 2024, the main tasks will be to develop a dissertation project on political-economic aspects of China’s global rise and to assist in the preparation of a large-scale, long-term grant application that will examine whether China’s changing international practices are giving rise to a novel type of empire (should this application be approved, there is a possibility of promotion to a four-year research position). Participation in the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS) is possible. Teaching opportunities can be arranged upon request.

Your responsibilities:

  • Developing a PhD project, including original research, data collection and interpretation
  • Assistance in the preparation of a large-scale long-term grant application

Your qualifications:

  • Very good M.A. degree in political science (especially International Relations or International Political Economy), sociology, or area studies.
  • Excellent knowledge of English; command of Mandarin Chinese would constitute an advantage
  • In-depth knowledge of China’s global rise and social science methods
