CfA: Postdoctoral Research Position working on South or Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Africa or the Middle East

Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) is a publicly-funded research centre for interdisciplinary research on the history, societies and cultures of Asia, Africa and the Middle East and their interconnections among one another and with Europe. The centre currently employs about 30 research fellows, the majority of them historians, scholars of Islam, and anthropologists, from a variety of countries. ZMO is one of three humanities’ research centres which together form Geisteswissenschaftliche Zentren Berlin e.V. ZMO is part of the Leibniz Association.

Within its research unit Religion and Intellectual Culture, ZMO seeks to recruit a postdoctoral scholar for initially one year working on South or Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Africa or the Middle East whose work will make a substantial contribution to the collaborative work of the Research Unit Religion and Intellectual Culture (https://www.zmo.de/en/research/mainresearchprogram/contested-religion).

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct of a post-doctoral research project leading to a monograph and further academic results
  • Presentation of findings at workshops and conferences
  • Participation in unit as well as ZMO activities
  • Assistance with the organization of unit events and writing academic reports
  • Contribution to unit outreach and knowledge transfer activities

Candidate profile:

  • PhD degree in history, social and cultural anthropology, sociology, religious studies or related disciplines), with a focus on the Muslim world from the 1800s to the present
  • Excellent command of English is required; German is desirable but not mandatory
  • Excellent communication and team skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Knowledge of language(s) of the region of research
  • Willingness to move to Berlin
  • In the framework of ZMO’s strategic development, we encourage projects involving Digital Humanities.

Remuneration will be according to Tarif des öffentlichen Dienstes (TvöD), grade 13 (http://oeffentlicher-dienst.info/tvoed/bund/).
