Call for Participation: Syllabus & Pedagogy Workshop 2024-25
Organized by the Society for East Asian Anthropology

Are you a first-time instructor who is looking for innovative ways to structure your courses? Have you recently joined a new institution and need to adapt your pedagogical approach? Looking to share and reinvigorate your teaching and un/grading methods? Grappling with fostering inclusive classrooms or designing impactful assignments? Eager to build connections and share best practices with fellow educators?

If any of these resonate, we invite you to participate in our upcoming pedagogy workshop organized by the Society for East Asian Anthropology. Based on the exchanges at the AAA meetings in 2023, this collaborative event aims to provide a space for instructors at all levels to come together, share course ideas, and engage in thought-provoking discussions around the art and science of teaching anthropology and East Asia.

The workshop for 2024-25 will take place in August, 2024, and January, 2025. Each workshop will be a virtual 90-minute session, where two presenters workshop their syllabi with two discussants and the general audience. Based on submitted information, we will try to match at least one faculty member and one graduate student with each presenter to encourage dynamic conversations.

Key Dates:

  • June 1: Show of interest through this form
  • Late July: Draft syllabus due (To be announced)
  • Early- or mid- August: Workshop (virtual, time TBD)

Please also let us know through the registration form if you’d like to participate in the role of presenter, discussant, or general audience. People will also receive updates about teaching communication workshops in the future, regarding grading, learning assessment, and other pedagogical practices (specifics to be announced). Whether you are a first-time instructor, mid-career, or senior, we welcome your valuable insights and look forward to facilitating an enriching mentoring experience.

We are eager to see what teaching interests emerge from this initiative as we develop this workshop. Feel free to reach out to us (claudia.huang[at]csulb.edu and jieun.cho[at]duke.edu) if you have any ideas and/or concerns!
