The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Turku invites applications for the position of University Lecturer in Chinese Language in the School of Languages and Translation Studies. The position will be filled on a fixed-term basis for the period of 1 March 2022 – 31 July 2024.
School of Languages and Translation Studies is an active, diverse and international centre for teaching and research on language studies. The research is carried out in several thematic research areas. The aim of its degree programmes is to offer education to future language experts in various national and international language expert positions.
University of Turku was granted the educational responsibility in the Chinese language in 2019. The School of Languages and Translation Studies offers Chinese Language degree studies in interdisciplinary collaboration with the University of Turku Centre for East Asian Studies (CEAS). Chinese Language degree studies focus on the contemporary Chinese language and expertise in linguistic communication, especially in the contexts of Chinese and international working life, global multilingualism as well as in digital interaction and communication. The studies aim to provide such skills and abilities that enable graduates to work in international positions in various fields, either in Finland, China or elsewhere in the world.
Job description
The post holder will be expected to contribute teaching of Bachelor’s (basic and intermediate studies) and Master’s (advanced studies) level modules for Chinese Language. As the Bachelor’s level studies require no prior skills in the Chinese language, the teaching includes modules on basic communicative language skills as well as modules on Chinese linguistics. At Master’s level specialized Chinese modules are taught within the Language Specialist Degree Programme. The applicant must possess native or near-native fluency in Chinese and well-developed interpersonal communication skills, and be fluent in Finnish and/or English.
Qualifications and requirements
In accordance with the university research career model, the position of university lecturer is a third-stage career position. The eligibility criteria for prospective applicants are defined in the University of Turku’s rules of procedure. Prospective applicants for the position of university lecturer must hold an appropriate doctoral degree and be able to provide high-quality teaching that is based on research knowledge, and have the ability to supervise theses on all levels. During the assessment of the merits of the applicants for the position, their scientific work, expertise in the field, teaching experience and pedagogical education, ability to produce study materials and other teaching merits as well as a demonstration lecture will be taken into account. In addition, successful applicants are required to demonstrate clear evidence of postdoctoral research and a detailed research agenda, which demonstrates an orientation that is in line with the subject’s range and focus, and the School of Languages and Translation Studies’ areas of expertise.
Salary
The salary for the position is determined on the basis of job demand assessment levels 5–7 of the university salary system for teaching and research personnel, where the task-specific salary component is between € 3000–4033 per month. A component that is based on personal performance is also paid in addition to the task-specific salary. Typically, this component constitutes 6–17 % of the task-specific salary at the beginning of the employment period.
Trial period
The position includes a 6-month trial period. The assignment begins on March 1, 2022 or upon mutual agreement.
