CfP: Buryatia: Bridging Siberia, Russia, and Eurasia
Workshop “Buryatia: Bridging Siberia, Russia, and Eurasia”

Venue: The Slavic-Eurasian Research Center, Hokkaido University, October 7–8, 2024
The workshop focuses on the study of Buryatia and its connections with the broader histories of Siberia, Russia, and Eurasia.
Several scales exist through which this borderland area can be discussed:
- horizontal and comparative relations with other units within the Siberian territory,
- vertical and uneven relations with the Russian/Soviet state, and
- entangled histories with Eurasia beyond the current political borders.
The workshop aims to explore Buryat history, culture, religion, economy, and society, including those in the Mongolian People’s Republic and Inner Mongolia.
Submissions on other Siberian and Mongol-speaking groups that offer fresh interpretative and methodological analyses of how to study non-Russian groups applicable to the Buryat case are also welcome.
Papers will be pre-circulated.

PhD students and early career researchers are encouraged to apply.
The workshop will be in a hybrid format, allowing for virtual participation.
Limited funds will be available to offset travel costs.
