CfP: Darshika Journal – At the crossroads of peoples, languages, and cultures – histories of Northern Thailand

Deadline: June 30, 2023 (abstracts), August 15, 2023 (articles)

The journal Darshikā: Journal of Integrative and Innovative Humanities is seeking submission of a special issue on the dynamics of Northern Thai cultures, languages, and societies.

Northern Thailand, bordering Siam, Burma, Laos, and China, served for centuries as a hub and melting pot for peoples, languages, and cultures. Shifting capital cities and fuzzy boundaries were part of the historical entity known as Lan Na, which only became delimited with the rise of nation states in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when Lan Na was gradually integrated into the Kingdom of Thailand. The history of Lan Na is reflected in the present linguistic and cultural landscape, as well as in the numerous chronicles and legends kept alive in the area.

Despite being part of central Thai administration and education, the Northern Thailand area retains its own dynamics with numerous non-Thai languages and cultures still alive, especially, but not exclusively in rural communities. Local Lan Na traditions retain their role in the cultural make-up, albeit increasingly assimilated to central Thai customs and language in urban contexts. Continued transborder exchange with neighboring countries adds to the diversity found in Northern Thailand.

This themed issue of the Darshika Journal brings together original research papers by international scholars working in the humanities or related fields with an interest in the dynamics of Northern Thai cultures, languages, and societies. The aim of the issue is to gain a better understanding of the area and its development, as well as its importance in Southeast Asia past and present.

IMPORTANT NOTES AND DATES

Authors who wish to contribute to this issue should express their interest with a short description (a few sentences) of the paper they plan to submit and submit it to the editor, Prof. Mathias Jenny, via mj@mathiasjenny.ch by June 30, 2023.

The paper submission should be done through the journal’s webpage no later than August 15, 2023. The journal does not have a strict word limit but we recommend that the manuscript be no longer than 7000 words excluding references. The manuscript must include an abstract no longer than 300 words. References must follow APA style. Please consult https://darshika.human.cmu.ac.th/Author-guidelines.html for more details.
