Description of Panel
The July 2013 elections signal a sea change in the Cambodian political landscape. For the first time since the 1993 re-introduction of multi-party elections, the steady increase in the Cambodian People’s Party’s vote has been broken. Political competition has now crystallised into a polarised duel between two contending blocs, offering a first credible challenge to the CPP’s hold on power. Whether the dynamics set in motion by the 2013 elections will lead to long-term change or will be stifled in the cradle, 2013 will stand out as a landmark year.
While it is evident that Cambodia is going through major social and political changes at the moment, the nature and direction of these remain elusive. Fresh scholarship is urgently needed to address unfolding developments and rethink received wisdoms on Cambodian politics and society.
This panel seeks to explore the profound changes that Cambodia is now going through from a variety of angles. It invites contributions that from different approaches address the nature and contents of ongoing transformations, or assess consequences and concerns for the future.
Please submit the title of your presentation and an abstract (max. 250 words) to the conveners.
Deadline for abstract submission: 15 February 2015.
