Description of Panel
Cities can be comprehended as networks of communication between people, architectonic objects, physical facts, nature etc.; Urbanism and Communication are therefore closely interrelated. Based on our own research on cities in Vietnam, we regard urbanism as being constituted by multiple patterns of communication. This perspective opens up a wide research agenda on urbanism and urban communicative practices in Southeast Asia. Among the topics we would like to explore in this panel are questions such as:
- What forms and patterns of communicative practices can be found in Southeast Asian cities and how do they relate to the built environment and/or urban green?
- Do specific urban modes of communication exist?
- Are some forms of urban communication and urbanism unique or original to Southeast Asia?
- Does a Southeast Asian (or Thai, Indonesian, Vietnamese etc.) urbanism exist?
We invite presentations that tackle these questions regarding topics such as urban symbolism, urban governance, urban media including print and online media, urban communication networks, communicative repertoires of urban dwellers, different representations of cities, etc.
We would like to encourage debates on the interrelationship between urbanism and communication and to provide a forum for the start of a network of scholars interested in these topics.
Please submit the title of your presentation and an abstract (max. 200 words) to the convenors.
Deadline for abstract submission: 15 February 2015.
