Fighting Divisions: Conflict and Power in a Post Globalisation Order

The Call for Papers for Network Q “Asian Capitalisms” at the SASE 2026 Annual Meeting has opened (https://sase.org/).
Network Q promotes theory and research on the diversity of socio-economic systems and capitalist development in Asia as well as its global implications. We welcome a wide range of theoretical perspectives (e.g. comparative and international political economy, economic sociology, management studies, industrial sociology, innovation studies, political science and international relations, geography, development studies, anthropology).

Network Q 2026 Theme
Asian Capitalisms in a Reglobalising Order

The study of Asian capitalism(s) has become central to understanding the reconfiguration of the global political economy. Far from converging on a single model, Asian capitalisms display diverse institutional forms, developmental logics, and industrial ecosystems that both complement and contest Western trajectories. In a reglobalising order marked by systemic competition, economic nationalism, and shifting alliances these varieties of capitalism are increasingly pivotal to debates on industrial policy, technological innovation, and geoeconomic strategy. Concepts such as deglobalisation and polycrisis have been used to capture the turbulence of the current moment as trade and tech wars, decoupling pressures, and neo-mercantilist policies reshape the global landscape.

Yet the rise of a global China, the expanding role of BRICS and new modalities of South–South cooperation suggest new forms of global economic integration around digitalisation and the green transition, placing Asia at the heart of debates on reglobalisation and the polytunities of the new meta-context. These dynamics reverberate unevenly across Asia’s vast expanse—from the Eurasian landmass to the Pacific Rim—and in their interactions with late-developing and peripheral economies in Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. This unsettled terrain raises pressing questions about the changing geography of Asian capitalisms and their encounters with other regions.

This year’s network will place particular emphasis on the role of Asian capitalisms in a reglobalising world (order) and how they are reshaping established patterns of socio-economic organisation.

We welcome papers and panels engaging with the following themes:

  • Reglobalisation of Asian economies
  • Reglobalization in the West in response to Asian capitalisms
  • Varieties and modalities of capitalism in Asia
  • Dynamics of Asian network and platform capitalism
  • Technological upgrading and emerging sectors in Asia
  • State capitalism in Asia and its impact abroad
  • Value chains and industrial policies in the East, West and Global South
  • Innovation, finance, and entrepreneurship in Asian capitalism(s)
  • Labour, education, and social policy in Asian capitalism(s)
  • Socio-political changes in Asia and its impact abroad
  • South-South, South-North and North-South collaborations, contestation and
    development

We welcome individual papers but also specifically encourage participants to submit panel proposals.

Network Q 2026 Submission types

For the 2026 conference, Network Q, invites individual paper submissions, submissions for thematic panels, and SASE Book Salon panels on recently published books.
Thematic panels can address any of the themes and issues above and should be based on paper drafts with a structured discussion including a discussant. Book Salon panels are composed of a minimum of three discussants with relevant expertise on a recently published book speaking to Network Q themes. Note that SASE seeks to promote gender equality. We thus strongly encourage you to take gender balance into account in panel proposals.

Submissions should be done through the SASE website: https://sase.org/events/conference-submission-and-award-guidelines/
