We are pleased to announce the launch of the South and Southeast Asian Popular Culture Series, published by Palgrave Macmillan. This groundbreaking series addresses the growing scholarly interest in popular culture across South Asia (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka) and Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam).

Series Focus and Scope

This is the first book series dedicated explicitly to South and Southeast Asian popular culture, filling a significant gap in academic publishing. Popular culture is broadly defined as an individual’s daily cultural environment, and this series embraces this comprehensive understanding. We welcome scholarship examining all aspects of popular culture, including:

  • Television, film, and digital media
  • Popular music and performance
  • Comics and graphic narratives
  • Popular press and journalism
  • Food culture and culinary practices
  • Fashion, lifestyle, and consumer culture
  • Gaming and digital entertainment
  • Sports and recreational culture
  • Festivals, celebrations, and cultural events
  • Urban culture and street practices
  • Religious and spiritual popular expressions
  • Politics and popular culture

Global Perspective

The series examines South and Southeast Asian popular culture within a global context, recognizing the interconnected nature of contemporary cultural production. We encourage scholarship that explores:

  • Transnational cultural flows and exchanges
  • The dialogue between Eastern and Western cultural forms
  • Regional cultural networks and influences
  • Diaspora communities and cultural adaptation
  • Digital globalization and cultural transmission

Interdisciplinary Approach

Reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of popular culture studies, we welcome submissions from scholars across the social sciences and humanities employing diverse methodological approaches, including but not limited to:

  • Media and communication studies
  • Anthropology and sociology
  • History and political science
  • Literary and cultural studies
  • Performance and visual studies
  • Digital humanities and technology studies

Submission Guidelines

We seek book-length manuscripts, manuscripts for Palgrave Pivot (25,000-50,000 words) and edited collections that offer:

  • Original research and fresh theoretical insights
  • Rigorous scholarly analysis combined with accessible writing
  • Cross-cultural or comparative perspectives
  • Engagement with contemporary debates in popular culture studies

Both established scholars and emerging voices are encouraged to submit proposals.
