Austrian Art, Culture, and Literature of the 20th/21st Century

The editors of the book series Interdisciplinary Studies in German Philology cordially invite submissions for their planned anthology on Austrian art, culture, and literature of the 20th/21st centuries. This volume aims to present a comprehensive analysis and discussion of significant cultural developments and artistic trends in Austria during the 20th and 21st centuries. In addition, we aim to emphasize the diversity and global nature of Austrian culture by exploring the relationships and interactions with other cultural spheres, including Asia. Therefore, we welcome contributions that examine the influences, interactions, and mutual enrichments between Austrian art, culture, and literature and the cultures of Asia. While topics may include but are not limited to:

  • The reception and reinterpretation of the Vienna Secession in Asian contexts
  • Architectural and urban influences between Austria and Asian countries
  • Photography as an artistic medium in Austria and in the Asian art scene
  • Avant-garde movements and experimental art practices in exchange with Asian cultures
  • Music and identity: exchange and fusion between Austrian and Asian music
  • Film and national narratives: comparative analyses of Austrian and Asian film art
  • Literary salons and intellectual networks: transcultural dialogues between Austrian and Asian writers and intellectuals
  • The Viennese Modernist movement and its legacy in the global context, including Asia
  • Identity constructions: intercultural perspectives on Austrian and Asian identities
  • Language experiments and language critique: comparative studies of linguistic innovations in Austria and Asia
  • Exile literature and migration: exchange of experiences and literary representations between Austrian and Asian exiled authors
  • Postmodernism and intertextual practices: transcultural references and intertextual entanglements between Austrian and Asian literature and art.
