Call For Contributions
Body, Bodily Practice and Healing in Chinese Medicine

Since its inception in 2018, Chinese Medicine and Culture has been dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of scholarly and critical writings to the world on the subject of medicine and medical culture in both traditional and modern China.   
    We write to announce that Chinese Medicine and Culture is planning a special issue devoted to scholarly and critical examination of all aspects of body and the views and practices centered on the body from the Chinese medical, religious, historical and folk traditions.  As the site of life, health and disease, and the object of medical, religious and cultural discourse, the human body and the body-based healing and health practice have long occupied our imagination. In this planned issue, we welcome original research articles, critical reviews and syntheses of the field, scholarly perspectives, book reviews, and clinical case studies on the following topics from all a academic disciplines: 

Suggested Topics for contributions:

  • Body constructions and representations in Chinese medical and religious sources; 
  • Body and life-cultivation culture and practices in traditional and modern China;
  • Body-Mind medicine and healing in China;
  • Body, sexuality, and gender in Chinese medicine and history; 
  • Body, disease, malnutrition, and death in Chinese medicine and history;
  • Body construction in East and West comparative perspectives;

Contribution categories:
For the planned issue, we will publish three categories of contributions: 
1)    Original research papers including case studies on the topics and subjects related to them;
2)    Critical reviews and syntheses of the field on issues, methodologies, and new materials related to the topics listed above;
3)    Book reviews, scholarly opinions and perspectives on the topics listed above;

Honoraria
Selected contributions will be paid honoraria ranging 1000 to 3000 CNY. Contributions of exceptionally high academic quality may be considered for additional increase in honoraria.   

Submission guidelines: 
All contributions will undergo a rigorous peer review process by our editorial board and external specialists. Authors will be notified individually of the peer review results by early 2025.

Original research articles (including clinical and case studies) normally range between 6,000-10,000 words each; and critical reviews and synthetic essays on issues and methodologies should be limited 4,500 to 8,000 words apiece; and the average length for book reviews, perspectives, and opinions is 3,000 to 6,000 words.
