The Annual Conference of Macao Studies 2024: Macao in Global China and Global Asia
Jointly Convened by Centre for Macau Studies, Macau Foundation, Journal of Contemporary Asia, China Information, and Journal of Macau Studies
2-3 December 2024, University of Macau, Macao
We are pleased to invite researchers who are interested in the study of Asia, Greater China, and Macao, to submit paper proposals for presentations at the Annual Conference of the Centre for Macau Studies, to be held on 2-3 December 2024 in Macao. This Annual Conference will be jointly convened by Centre for Macau Studies, Macau Foundation, and three referred journals, namely Journal of Contemporary Asia, China Information, and Journal of Macau Studies. Selected papers will be considered for publication in the journals.
The Conference will feature keynote address, panel papers, and discussions on topics related to various roles played by Macao in Global China and Global Asia. The Conference will be hosted by the Centre for Macau Studies at the University of Macau.

Themes of the Conference
The conveners welcome proposals for original papers on the following themes related to various roles played by Macao within the Global China and Global Asia contexts.
- Geo-economics, geo-politics, and scalar politics
- Globalization, neoliberalism, and global and regional political economy
- Digital politics and social engineering under Big Data
- Urbanism, heritage, and sustainable development
- Local histories and shifting identities
- Institutional change and governance
- Civil society, citizenship, and resistance
- Class and inequality
- Social cleavages and marginalization
- Health humanities and medical sociology
- Others
Submission Instructions
- Papers should represent original works by the authors. They should not be published previously or currently under review by publishers.
- Language: Chinese / English
- Full papers (10,000 words, including notes, tables, and references) should be sent by mid-November 2024 if they wish to be considered for publication by the three journals co-hosting the event.
- The Conference will take place in a hybrid mode. Online participation via zoom is also welcome. When submitting a proposal, please indicate whether you would like to take part in person or via zoom.
- For Individual papers: Please submit abstracts (max 300 words) before 30 April 2024 through our conference webpage: Individual Paper Submission
- For panel proposals: Please submit an abstract of the conference theme (max 300 words), and the abstracts of individual panel papers (max 300 words each). A panel should have a minimum of three papers and a maximum of four papers. Please also include the name of the panel chair and discussant, if any. Panel proposals should be submitted before 30 April 2024 through our conference webpage: Panel Submission
- The conveners will have first right to select and publish the papers or their revised forms. Selected papers will be considered for publication in Journal of Contemporary Asia, China Information, or Journal of Macau Studies, subject to each journal’s refereeing policies and processes.
Conference Venue, Accommodation, and Registration
The Conference will take place at the University of Macau. The organizer will provide hotel accommodation to participants who are expected to take care of their own travel expenses. Other participants will join the online sessions/ panels.
The organizer reserves the right to reject the conference papers and withhold accommodation should the submitted papers fall short of acceptable scholarly standard.
Pre-registration is needed for the Conference, and registration fee is required:
- Please note that all presenters and participants must register to attend the conference. There are no refunds for cancellations and no-shows.
- MOP 100 (for authors who take part via zoom)
- MOP 500 (the fee will include 4 meals during the conference)
- MOP 1,000 (the fee will include 3 nights’ accommodations at the University Guest House, and 4 meals during the conference)
- Participants should take care of their own travel arrangements and expenses.
- Accepted authors who fail to pay the registration fee before the deadline will have their names removed from the conference programme.
