Dear Sir or Madam,

In December 2018 member states of the United Nations will be meeting in Marrakesh, Morocco, to finalise and adopt the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, signalling a new era for international cooperation on human mobility and migration management. The text for this landmark document has been developed through several stages of intergovernmental talks and domestic dialogues with civil society. While global governance is the overarching aim of this multi-year effort, regional voices and insights cannot be overlooked either.

In this GIGA Talk we will address the scope for regional participation in the Global Compact proceedings, as well as the current debates and opportunities at the regional level in Asia-Pacific, in Latin America and the Caribbean, and in Europe and Germany. The Talk will focus on regional perspectives on the protection of vulnerable migrants at a time when calls for border securitization and restrictive immigration policies are forever on the rise.

Speakers:
Dr. Diego Acosta, Reader in European and Migration Law at the University of Bristol
Prof. Dr. Nicola Piper, Professor at the University of Sydney and Director of the Sydney Asia Pacific Migration Centre
Dr. Steffen Angenendt, Head of Research Division on Global Issues at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP)

Commentary and Moderation:
Dr. Luicy Pedroza, Research Fellow and Leader of Research Project “Every Immigrant Is an Emigrant” at the GIGA
