The Faculty of Arts of the University of Helsinki (http://www.helsinki.fi/hum/) is Finland’s oldest and largest department of education and research in the field of science in terms of structure and subject selection. It is also an important international research, educational and cultural community. The Faculty of Arts studies and teaches languages and literature spoken in Europe and other parts of the world, with almost 40 languages. In addition, we are developing the general theory of linguistics, translation science and literary research.
Faculty of Arts is looking for
UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN CHINESE LANGUAGE
for an open-ended employment relationship as of 1 August 2022 or by agreement. The position is filled on a six-month probationary period. The position is located in the Department of Languages.
The university lecturer is responsible for the teaching based on the degree requirements of Chinese and plans teaching in bachelor’s and master’s programs in languages together with other East Asian language teachers. The work includes teaching all aspects of Chinese language skills. The tasks may also include other teaching. The University Lecturer must also conduct independent scientific research, inspect and supervise theses and carry out jointly agreed administrative tasks.
We are looking for someone with experience in teaching Chinese as a foreign language, preferably outside China and Taiwan, and experience or interest in training Chinese language teachers. In addition, we wish you to have experience in teaching and teaching technologies in different learning environments, as well as the readiness to participate actively in the development of training programs. The experience of guiding thesis and administrative tasks related to teaching is also an advantage.
QUALIFICATIONS
According to the University of Helsinki’s regulations, the selected candidate is required to have a doctoral degree in Chinese as a foreign language, Chinese language or other suitable field and the ability to provide high-quality research-based teaching and to direct theses.
When assessing the merits of applicants, scientific publications and other research results with scientific value, teaching experience relevant to the task, pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other merits achieved in teaching positions and if necessary a teaching demonstration shall be taken into account. The candidate has to have publications also in other languages than Chinese in international publications in the field.
Successful completion of the task requires excellent English and Chinese (Mandarin) skills. Finnish language skills can be considered an advantage. If the applicant’s mother tongue is not Chinese, chinese language proficiency must be demonstrated, for example, by means of an international language proficiency certificate. The university lecturer provides language skills and other teaching independently at all levels of the Bachelor’s and Master’s Programme in Finnish or English and Chinese.

The remuneration of the position is based on levels 5–7 of the level of complexity map of the teaching and research staff of the university’s remuneration system. In addition, a salary component based on personal performance is paid. The university lecturer’s gross salary is approximately EUR 3,500–4,500 per month, depending on the earnings and experience of the person to be selected.
