University of Oslo
10-12 June 2025
Deadline for application: 20 March 2025

In this seminar, we will explore the state and potential future of geopolitical developments under the influence of a rising China and its increasingly mobile actors, and how this influence is being felt around the globe. We study China’s multifaceted impact on the global stage and the various and complex elements of international power dynamics involved, which may include analyses of China’s territorial claims, military buildup, the steering of trade flows and supply chains, creation of world-leading capabilities in science and high-tech applications, the fostering of alliances and building of new institutions, and investments in logistical and commercial infrastructure around the world. Using a broad definition of “geopolitics/geopolitical”, we will discuss and expand upon classical perspectives, and include new methodological approaches such as “Global China” to capture the multiple dimensions, layers, and agents of current developments. The course is designed to incorporate multidisciplinary perspectives from and about a wide range of countries, regions, and other collectivities into analyses and discussions of China’s global role.

Participation is free, but PhD students will need to cover their own travel expenses. A limited number of stipends is available for applicants from ODA countries. Please apply by sending an abstract of the short research paper that you will present during the seminar and your CV to Anna Ahlers (a.l.ahlers[at]ikos.uio.no) by 20 March 2025 (later applications can perhaps be accepted if not all spots are filled by then).
