Reformulating, Rewriting: Forms and Dynamics of Commentary in the Chinese Tradition

Share:

The REFORMULATING 2025 workshop examines the Chinese tradition of commentary, which evolves through reformulation to adapt texts to shifting knowledge, audiences, and linguistic contexts. Commentaries, ranging from glosses to rewritings, reinterpret Classics, literature, and history, as seen in Kong Yingda’s Tang-era expansions or Ming novelized narratives. Reformulation addresses linguistic evolution, historical relevance, and new discursive techniques to engage diverse readers, including through education and performance. It transforms texts’ status, creating networks of meaning that challenge original-derivative distinctions. Proposals are invited on topics like intersemiotic translation, knowledge transfer, linguistic registers, and historical adaptations across all periods of Chinese history.
