Riccardo Di Cato: Christian Diffusion, Development, and Capitalism: Evidence from China

Share:

Is there a link between the spread of Christianity and the take-up of capitalism and economic development? Riccardo Di Cato, a PhD student in Economics at the University of California San Diego, will look at the historical data on banks and enterprises in China, and overlay that with a series of current economic and social outcomes. What accounts for the variations across China? Could the diffusion of missionaries and the role of religious networks be an important but overlooked factor? In his talk, “Christian Diffusion, Development, and Capitalism: Evidence from China,” Di Cato explores the economic legacy of Christian missions in the Mainland.

This presentation is the fifth in a series sponsored by the Center for Global Christianity and Mission at Boston University, in which scholars from different disciplines use the China Historical Christian Database to answer complex questions about the relationship between Christianity and modern China.
