„The Most Important Island in the World“: Book Talk and Roundtable Discussion with Klaus Bardenhagen

In recent years, Taiwan has received growing attention in the global media landscape. However, much of the coverage remains narrowly focused on Cross-Strait tensions, often overlooking the vibrant cultures, dynamic society, and thriving democratic values that define the country. German journalist Klaus Bardenhagen is one of the key figures helping the world have a more rounded, nuanced understanding of Taiwan.

Since 2008, Klaus has been conducting in-depth reporting in Taiwan. In 2024, he published the book Die wichtigste Insel der Welt (The Most Important Island in the World). Through his work, Klaus is dedicated to promoting Taiwan’s democracy, society, and culture, showcasing the island’s diversity and vibrant dynamics to an international audience.

This February, the Taiwan Youth Initiatives in Europe (TYIE) is honoured to invite Klaus as a keynote speaker. With engaging interactions and insightful Q&A discussions, Klaus will guide participants to reflect upon Taiwan’s role in the international community and how media can enhance Taiwan’s global visibility. The event aims to inspire attendees to explore Taiwan’s global influence and potential collaborations with international partners.

About the Speaker:
Originally from Germany, Klaus Bardenhagen has been based in Taiwan for many years. With his precise and in-depth observations of the local society and political landscape, he also calls Taiwan his „second home.“
Klaus graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in European Film Studies. Prior to his career in Taiwan, he worked as a journalist for Germany’s public broadcasters Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF) and Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR). As a seasoned media practitioner, he has compiled his years of insights and observations into his book Die wichtigste Insel der Welt (The Most Important Island in the World), aspiring to amplify Taiwan’s voice on the global stage.
